In the last 4 weeks I’ve produced and been on shows with Kumail Nanjiani, Craig Robinson, Brett Goldstein, Iliza Shlezinger, had a callback audition for the Laugh Factory and every day that I haven’t performed I’ve been writing or doing an open mic.

I crushed at every comedy show I did, except the last one…

THE MOON ROOM

Brett (Roy Kent), Kumail, a couple of the other comics and I are in a makeshift green room shooting shit. There were a 100 people right above us, upstairs in a sleek new cocktail bar in West Hollywood waiting for the show to start.

But us comics had unanimously decided we needed to wait a bit longer. Because you see the bar’s northern wall was all windows without any curtains and even at 7:30 pm the sun hadn’t set, causing the room to be flooded with sunlight, which is terrible for a comedy venue.

A good venue MUST BE DARK. Because, turns out people are embarrassed to be seen laughing, so the darker the room the more freely people will laugh. Crazy right?

Back in the green room, Kumail jokes about how the venue (which is called the Moon Room) is actually full of Sun, ironically, we talk about the desert menu and how Kumail can’t eat any, Everyone’s chatting, introducing themselves and having great conversations.

I’m trying to act cool and make jokes and add to the conversation but I also realize I have a lot of newly written material that has punchlines I’ve not memorized so I go through them on my phone. After about 20 minutes, I get up and say,

“I think it’s time.”

At this point everyone gets up, with a camaraderie I haven’t felt in a green room before and Brett Goldstein puts his hand out and says “Shall we?”.

It took me a second to understand what he was signaling too, but everyone walked instinctively towards him forming a huddle.

The deadpan, dry comic who played Roy Kent in Ted Lasso wanted us all to put our hands together and cheer before we start the show.

“One, Two, THREE, COMEDY!”

It all happened so quickly, I didn’t realize I did one of the funniest and dorkiest things possible before a comedy show.

It felt…natural.

As we all exit the room I audibly say,

“Wow, I feel like we really bonded there”.

The first of my many jokes to bomb that night.

Apologies for not sending out the newsletter the last couple weeks, shows, writing and mics have taken up most of my time.

Also I’ve been doing some thinking about the newsletter itself, while it is therapeutic and a lot of fun to write, it isn’t providing me with value I wanted from it. At this point it’s more of a personal blog of a journey of a comic that all you readers know well. And while I want to maintain this, this may not be the most valuable medium for it (in terms of getting the most eyeballs)

All this to say that the frequency of this newsletter may decrease from once a week to something more spontaneous. AND in terms of following the journey of the comedian, well I’ve got some ideas I’ll be sharing very soon :)

BUT FIRST - The next couple weeks I’ll be experimenting with a new video formula.

Take a universally accepted truth + create a situation + exaggerate it 3 to 4 times + Climax (but the climax could be a misdirection followed by exaggeration)

This is the basis of a lot of improv and sketch comedy. Take a situation and keep exaggerating it until you can exhaust it. Notice it the next time you watch Key & Peele.

I wrote this formula and brainstormed video ideas to fit in, here’s the result

The fuck is a Bringer? 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could perform at the comedy club of your dreams?

The place you thought would take several years to get to perform at, what if you could get a spot now?

What a feeling to have all your friends and family see you making it…

So how do I get on?

“Sell 10 tickets with a 2 drink minimum and if you can’t, you’re off the lineup”

That’s all.

On the surface they don’t seem harmful, but zoom out a bit and this shit gets sketch.

But before we go on, some comedy lingo for you -

1. Producer: This is the creator of a comedy show. The person who comes up with the idea, name, books other comics, marketing, sells tickets. You get the idea.

   A producer is usually also a comic doing this to get stage time.

2. Booker: Person working at a comedy club that books comics to perform at their club and other producers to produce shows for their club.

A club will have produce it’s own shows AND have independent producers run their own shows at the clubs.

If you’ve ever heard of a show like “<Enter Comic Name> and Friends” at a comedy club. The show is being produced by that comic! That means they are paying the club a rental fee or they’ve got a shitty door deal with them, where the club keeps 70% from tickets and 100% of F&B

Every producer needs to remember the golden rule

SO NOW you’re a producer who’s booked a show at the comedy store and you need to sell a 100 tickets to sellout and be able to do this again next month. You invite 30 of your friends, 20 buy a ticket. You sell 20 via ads, 60 more to go! What to do?

Answer: Book a few new comics and make sure they can sell 10+ tickets to their friends and family.

Cha Ching!

The club will love me and keep giving me the show, maybe I’ll become friends with the booker and they’ll put me on their weekend shows. I get stage time every month, with a real audience and at a named club. THIS IS HUGE.

This seems like a Win - Win. Booker books show, producer sells out, comic gets a spot.

It’s a slippery slope my friend…

Now this producer is stuck in a viscous loop, because a show at the big club means you can provide more people with stage time who’ll in turn do the same for you. Barter system with shows works immensely well amongst producers.

You’ve got 8 comics to book, 2 will be other producers you can exchange stage time with and 6 will be Bringer Spots!

That’s all. The producers pocket the whole thing because "UM, I gave you an opportunity no one else would, you owe me.“

The comics think it’s amazing and actually are in-debt to this person, because they’ve been stuck doing small rooms and they’ve finally got the chance to stand on the same stage Dave Chapelle has stood on and for a moment felt like a peer.

In a sense that is priceless.

Bringer shows have immense values, I’ve done a ton and still have to. They only end once you can sell tickets on your own, i.e. you famous.

BUT the problem is - they masquerade around as big platforms for young comics to get discovered on. When in reality no booker ever sees those shows and all they are is 10 comics performing to a sold out crowd of each others friends and family. While the producer gets stage time and money.

I understand why the producers do what they do, it’s the easiest way to run a show without going through the hardship of building your own brand. And most lesser known comics would do this if they had a chance.

BUT WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND

Comedy is one of the only art forms where the artist is almost never paid

And then the other day I was having this conversation with another comic friend who’s a regular at big clubs and he stopped me midway through my rant about bringers and said something that shut me up.

Fuck. He’s right.

Bill Burr wouldn’t be headlining clubs if he wasn’t selling out shows, Hasan Minhaj wouldn’t be touring if he couldn’t sell tickets in every city.

I wouldn’t have been at The Comedy Store if I couldn’t sell 10 tickets.

So really, every show from now until selling out theaters is a bringer.

You better pray your circle of fans keeps growing…

Comic of the Week 🫡

I’ve seen this dude perform several times at the Laugh Factory and he’s one of the only comics I know that does physical comedy like he does.

One of the things you notice while doing comedy is that there’s no limit to what’s funny. It’s not just jokes, it can be your presence, it can be gimmicks, it can be personality traits, ticks that you might have, a weird laugh. All of these can be used to compound the audience’s laughter and physical comedy is my favorite.

Think Jim Carrey in the mask. If you read the script out loud it wouldn’t be funny. But it’s the physicality of the character that creates the comedy.

That’s what Preacher does so well. One of the things I remember from our conversation was him telling me, in comedy you’re as old as the number of years you’ve been doing it. I’ve been doing it for 14 years, which makes me 14. Someone like Louis CK has been doing it for 35 years, so that’s his age in comedy and the wisdom. So when you start comparing yourself to another comic, think about that.

Part 1

Before I started doing comedy, anytime I was at The Comedy Store I’d be in awe of the comics who were performing. It didn’t matter if they were good, there was an aura about them.

It felt like I could be watching the next Dave Chapelle or Vir Das. I was at the most iconic comedy club in the world in the heart of Los Angeles watching comedians perform at prime time.

The host would bring the next comic out with an introduction like “You may have seen him on yada yada show on Netflix and he performs at Comedy Clubs all over the country” and boom you look at the person and start building their backstory.

Wow, they’re on Netflix AND they perform at the Comedy Store? This must be a big name in the making, he must know a lot of amazing comics and famous people, they’re probably on sets all day doing commercials maybe movies and comedy clubs all night. That’s gotta be the dream.

NOPE.

This is their story. They’re an actor and standup comic who didn’t get paid to this set, they’ve been on a single season Netflix show as a recurring character with a couple lines, they do auditions all the time but barely get anything. Their main job is as a cashier at Trader Joe’s and they make extra money editing videos on the side. They perform at the store once or twice a month if they’re lucky and it depends on how many tickets they can sell.

AND THE BEST PART??

Total cash earned from standup comedy over the past 5 years is -$17,890

That was minus 17 grand.

Why?

IT IS DIFFICULT getting stage time as a comic in LA. Think about it, every big comic you know lives in LA. Chapelle drops by every month, so does Bill Burr. Jim Jeffries, Russel Peters, Gabriel Iglesias, Kevin Hart live here. You get the point.

Comedy clubs know this. People are here to see the big names, the fact that you get to be on stage with them is a blessing and you’ll do it for free.

Not only that but the SHEER number of AMAZING comics in LA who have not yet made it is so large that clubs can cycle through these comics for months before repeating them.

They don’t need you, you need them.

They know you’ll do anything for stage time, you’ll even PAY…

It gets worse but I’ll leave that for part two.

Comic of the Week: Sahib Cant Singh

You might remember him from his viral tiktok videos as the home depot guy. This is one of those comics that’s been on the scene for a long time and has had great success on social media but hasn’t blown up for standup comedy yet.

I’ve seen Sahib perform multiple times and spent some time with him as well. This dude absolutely CRUSHES! His joke writing, delivery, style is so different from any other brown comic I’ve seen. Definitely go down a rabbit hole of his videos cause they are hilarious.

1. This has not turned out to be what I thought it was going to be

I started Killing shame with the sole purpose of building an audience that loves comedy. WITH the ulterior motive of growing that list of audience members to a size that allowed me to sell tickets to my shows.

So basically I was planning on using you.

The format was going to be everything RAW Comedy, from making it as a comedian to joke writing processes to industry details.

BUT after the first couple posts I realized I didn’t have that much wisdom about comedy 🤣

2. What went well?

The first month each post was planned in advance. I had a shortlist of topics, I filtered it down to one during the week, crafted small details about what I’d talk about every day and then spend one Sunday writing the entire post.

This started off well but eventually felt that by me trying to polish my thoughts and articles, this medium became impersonal.

I wanted to be more vulnerable. So I started writing the day before submission. Voila! The procrastinator in me won 😭

That worked! Writing without a topic and thoughts crafted over days lifts so much pressure from this having to be deeply valuable.

It gives me the freedom to write about what’s bothering me the most, what I’ve been thinking about the most, what has been affecting me a lot. It’s raw.

And that immediately showed a big difference. In the number of responses I got, the number of conversations each post sparked. The feedback was instant.

3. What didn’t go well?

I thought I’d have thousands of subscribers by now hahaha 😂

What’s that famous quote? “People overestimate what they can do in a short period of time and underestimate what they can do in long period.”

That is LITERALLY ME.

I figured by cross posting on LinkedIn I could get some serious eyes on this.

But to my surprise I’ve gotten 40K impressions and only a handful have turned into subscribers.

Cause if you think about it - what is the real value prop here?

- Learning about a comics journey? - not exciting if you don’t know them

- Discovering new comics? - there is social media for that

- Watching more standup clips of me? - again not exciting if you don’t know me

Learning about the Standup Comedy journey IMO is not enough.

There’s gotta be more and that’s what I’m trying to figure out 🤷

It was a stressful time where I spent 7 days/week in the library. Prepping for exams, interviewing for competitive internships and uncertainty of the future took it’s toll.

Free-writing was therapeutic. Every morning on a blank page I’d write without an agenda until my thoughts stopped. I could be writing for 5 mins or 20, it just depended on how much was on my mind.

Over the past 4 years I’ve written 100s of these daily posts and the best part is reading them is like viewing a snapshot into a previous you.

It feels like remembering someone you forgot. They had different problems in life, a different mindset, their goals may now be your achievements.

They were a you that you no longer are.

I think it’s worth sharing some of those previous you’s, because I just read one from a long time ago and he asked me a question that made me pause.

Would younger you be proud of you?

I think so.

I fear the day I don’t think he does.

Why?

Because it means I’ve let him down. He had dreams and aspirations and a vision that he entrusted me with and I wasn’t able to bear their weight.

But what about your dreams? Don’t they matter?

I don’t know. My dreams haven’t changed much, they’ve gotten more precise. It began with the need to stop being afraid. I hated living with dreams that I was too afraid to even speak about.

My dream was simple. I wanted to follow my fears.

Overtime that dream has shaped the what my life is today. Finding comedy was exactly that.

• The culmination of my love for doing what I’m scared to do - public speaking

• Making people laugh

• Being the center of attention (ofc)

• And doing something that most people would never be able to

So in a sense each of those Nishants from a previous post has brought me here today. One step at a time, chiseling away at the directionless mind, to find purpose and excitement and goals and a life.

How can I let them down?

Something’s wrong with me

I am barely feeling shame on stage doing the weirdest shit. About 6 shows ago I kinda bombed in Dubai and it felt weird.

I didn’t want to get back on stage again.

Last week I did 4 shows and your boy is BACK!

Here’s a list of some of the weird shit I did:

• A set where I didn’t say a single word for the first 2 minutes

• 5 minutes of crowdwork at a bar where no one was interested in the show

• Wore a Kandura (Arab attire) and brown shoes that didn’t match while performing

• Went into the crowd, met people, shook hands, KISSED PEOPLE

IT GOT WEIRD - And I feel amazing.

The weirder it got, the more enjoyable it became.

The crowd can feel it to, everyone in the room senses the tension you create by being weird AND the key is to OWN it.

Most comics will do something weird that they think is funny and immediately retreat back to their normal self because it FEELS FUCKING ODD to stay there - it’s valid.

But the GOLD lies beyond in the ODD.

By staying in the ODD you get to convince the audience that this may not be an ACT.

YOU ARE WEIRD - they believe it - and now IT’S ON.

The audience and you arrive at a place none of you have been to before, it’s unknown, it’s scary but they trust you now and believe you’re about to show them something special.

This might be one of the most amazing places a comic can be at because it requires the audience to put blind trust in you and ONLY then can they enjoy the humor and LAUGH like no one’s listening.

The first few minutes are crucial for the audience to trust that you can make them laugh and only then will they truly laugh.

That’s why opening a show is the toughest spot and so are the first few minutes of your set to an unknown audience.

So try being weird this week. That’s your homework.

• Ask if you could get your coffee for free when you order at Starbucks next

• Maintain eye contact with people when you walk down the street (fight the urge to look away, you win if they look away first)

  • just in case you do this and the other person is ALSO WEIRD and calls you out just say you thought they were someone you knew (circa 4 hour work week)

• Ask that cute girl/guy at your gym for their number

(BONUS POINTS FOR BEING WEIRD WHEN DOING THESE)

Me vs. Heckler (Video of the week) 💣

This was the settings, I reached the show last Sunday and there was a woman in the crowd drunk out of her mind screaming and yelling at the most random times.

She wasn’t saying anything rude, she just laughed loudly when there were no punchlines, screamed randomly and was a total distraction.

Comics tried to befriend her, security tied to shut her up, they tried to do crowdwork with her but nothing worked.

I’ve been in these situations before and I’ve talked about how I destroyed a heckler but the audience turned against me because I got too mean.

Speaking of energy, this man puts THE MOST electrifying live show I’ve been to in my life. Meet Rene Vaca.

This dude used to do open mics with my friends in 2019 and now he’s touring the country as the most popular Mexican comic.

How did he rise so quickly? It’s because of the LEG. He does something no one else does, he involves the crowd in a way that gets people literally rolling on the floor.

This last week I did the most shows I’ve ever done in a week in LA - Four. This is how I felt after

“Man, I’m good at this”

“The crowds loved me, I did new material, I crushed”

“If I could do this every week, imagine how much better I’d be in a year”

The week BEFORE though, this is how I felt.

“You’re barely doing any shows, no open mics, you haven’t written new material”

“The odds of comedy working out for you is so close to 0”

“Be Practical. Give up”

Be practical. I love this statement because it’s VALID.

So let’s calculate what the most practical path forward is

“Be Practical. Give up”

We can tell what the most practical path forward is but I’ve learned that appearances are deceiving. So if something seems practical, it must be proved.

Let’s do that.

Left Hand Side = Path One

1. Stop pursuing comedy and focus on your day job.

You work as a Software Engineer at an amazing company. You like what you do and you’ve proved you’re good at it. The money is great and if you keep at it you can increase your salary manifold in the next couple years.

2. Invest your spare time in something that makes $$$

You’ve got a ton of ideas, it’s time to invest in real estate, create the prototype for that product you thought of, AI DUDE - it’s time to automate your income.

Right Hand Side = Path Two

1. The odds of making it in comedy are 0.0000001%

There are SO MANY amazing comics who’ve reached nowhere and even if you start doing regular shows and touring it’s going to take YEARS to be able to hit your current income.

2. It involves traveling, spending nights in bars, clubs for life

Can you keep this up? You’re not in your 20s anymore, what happens when you start a family? How is this practical?

3. If you fail, you’re going to watch everyone do so much better than you

Your friends will be in better positions with better jobs and houses and you just might be performing at those same bars for nothing.

It’s pretty evident at this point that LHS > RHS.

What if I just stopped the post at this point and said you know what, I’ve heard enough this makes a lot of sense 😂

These are all valid points and they don’t just pertain to pursuing a job, it could be related to any major life change you might be debating about.

There is ONE point though that changes the equation:

4. What if it works?

What if you make it? What if you end up doing what you could barely believe you’d achieve? What if it fucking works?

The money, the satisfaction, the joy from doing what you love, the receipt of knowing you can do what you said you’d do. Every single one of these is far better in Path Two.

Best Case scenario of Path Two is FAR GREATER than Best Case scenario of Path One.

It seems like taking the shot is the most logical decision here.

Be Practical. Take the shot. Because

Right after I performed at the Comedy Store, I went to the Laugh Factory to watch some true professionals. And MAN was I left in awe.

I’ve seen this man perform more than 20 times probably and I’ve never seen him do material. I get laughs, he gets people crying uncontrollably in clubs. It’s unreal.

I’ve seen him perform after Kevin Hart, Chris Delia, Chris Rock and he never fails to murder. Meet the Persian King - Max Amini!

Making the football team? Figure out your strengths, play with people better than you, put in the work.

Getting your dream job? Know what it takes, network, use Glassdoor, practice for the interview, put in the work.

I can’t think of any goal I’ve had that didn’t have the steps outlined.

If I did what I had to do, the outcome would exist.

(it’s another story I didn’t do most of these, but it was clear how to achieve them haha)

Until now. How do you become a comedian? Write jokes, get shows, become undeniably funny, eventually someone’s going to recognize you. Right?

What’s the target here? Getting a Netflix special? Traveling and performing at clubs? Doing a podcast? Doing movies? Producing your own shows?

How do you know that you’re on the right track?

The road less traveled is romanticized.

But why?

The attraction to explore this road is almost primal. It attracts all but scares most.

The choice to avoid it could be comfort in familiarity, practicality, lack of initiative or something else.

But the choice to take it - that intrigues me.

I think we face this choice daily.

Choosing to go to the gym, eating healthy, being brave, thinking outside the box are all examples of being in this minority. The more consequential the decision the smaller the minority.

Personally, choosing this romanticized path has been part of my decision making.

As a kid it resulted in guaranteed rebellion 😉

As an adult, it provides insight into following my gut.

The path less traveled is a GOOD indicator of the right path that’s ignored because it’s more difficult.

Finding a job that’s right for you.

Switching to a career that excites you.

Shooting for goals that scare you.

Finding purpose.

All of these are adult decisions with two paths, the easy way and the hard way.

I only know a handful of people who’ve attempted to go down these difficult paths.

And I get it. These are very difficult questions with extremely painful answers and to most an unacceptable risk to reward ratio.

Back to the intrigue - So why do people chose the path less traveled?

I think it boils down to curiosity.

What if there’s something I can be really good at?

What if there’s a way it could work?

What if it makes me fulfilled?

You chose this path when the itch to answer these questions is greater than the perceived pain of going down it.

Curiosity killed the cat but what if it saved the human?

This week’s comic is a hidden treasure. He’s one of those comics who’s bee around forever and done everything but never reached real stardom.

• He’s been doing comedy longer than I’ve been alive and still tours to this day

I can spend hours scrolling through his videos and he’s one of the few comics that makes me laugh out regularly.

The year is 1919. The Great War (WW1) was finally done and Great Britain had won.

But the British in India were far from celebrating with butter chicken and naan breads.

They were worried.

Indian soldiers who fought with the British in the trenches realized that they were just lil bitches who screamed “blimey” every time someone shot at them.

Indians were no longer in awe of the white man - anyone who needs so much sunscreen could not possibly be feared.

The British were worried that the Indians would revolt especially since the snacks served at war were more bland than Prince Philips dirty talk.

So they implemented the Rowlatt Acts - basically what the USA did after 9/11 with the Patriot Act where they could spy on everyone - except in this case the terrorists implemented it so they could jail anyone without appeal.

The Rowlatt Acts did what the Australians did to India in the cricket world cup finals - they fucked us. There were protests everywhere

The biggest threat of revolt was in Punjab - because a majority of the Indian soldiers sent to war were from Punjab.

Enter General Dyer. Born in India, He was a Brigadier General in the British Army and unhappy with his life after he lost a cricket match to an Indian who also slept with his wife…

On the day of the Indian festival Baisakhi (April 13, 1919) a peaceful gathering was held at the Jalian Wala Bhag in protest of the Rowlatt Acts.

It’s said up to 10,000 people were at this park a few for the protest but most celebrating the festival.

General Dyer arrived with 50 soldiers and 2 armored cars and without warning emptied the entire troops ammunition on the public.

He killed 1500 Indians in 11 minutes. Take that diabetes.

The British said 300 but who’s math skills are you gonna trust?

Like they did with Princess Diane, the British tried to change the narrative and keep it under wraps, but the news spread and people were PISSED.

Dyer became a British hero, he was promoted (although subsequently let go) and funds were raised because he was let go by British women all over the world. Ahh the original Karens!

Eventually a special committee was set up to investigate his actions, and when asked why he did this? Dyer responded “Mujhe Dugna Lagaaan Chahiye tha”.

Although one of the saddest moments during the occupation of India, it was critical because even the British Loyalist Indians realized - Fuck The British.

It was the start of the end of the British occupation.

THE BEST PART?!

The real orchestrater of these events was General Dyer’s Irish Boss General Dwyer because the Irish and the British are like Indians and Pakistani’s. Same names different GDPs.

Dwyer was the one who enacted martial law in Punjab and allowed Dyer to do what he did.

But anyone who has a Punjabi friend knows that they never let shit go.

Because 21 years later while Dwyer was presiding over an East India Association meeting in London, the stud Udham Singh, traveled to London and emptied two bullets into his skull.

I’ve always wanted to add different elements to standup, so naturally dance was the first option. It’s not very easy to experiment with this since you need more stage time with specifically larger audiences for this to work well with.

I’ve been following Jeff Arcuri for a while and over the past year he has been BLOWING UP.

IMO he’s got some of the best crowdwork skills in the game atm. The beauty of his comedy is that he never comes across as aggressive which is always challenging when you’re confrontational which crowd work often becomes. He has this amazing ability to stay friendly yet talk shit.

You’ll see what I mean.

My dad worked at a petrol pump growing up

My mums house didn’t have water or electricity throughout college.

Dad could’ve easily stayed at the petrol pump, my mom could’ve quit college and my life would’ve been completely different.

Comedy would likely never have been an option, you wouldn’t be reading this and we probably wouldn’t have even heard of each other.

It’s costly being you 👀

I’m in India this week traveling through my parents hometowns.

We ate at my dads favorite spot, walked around his 150 year old house, prayed at their 300 year old family temple and talked about life.

It’s a beautiful experience going down their memory lane, seeing the decisions they made that selfishly speaking have affected my life so much.

• His decision to move from India to Dubai for a better life

• The risk to quit his job and start a business cause he’d had enough

• My mom pursuing two BA’s studying in a home without light

• Saving every cent to make sure their kids don’t suffer a day in their lives

Even writing this brings tears to my eyes, because that is way more of a sacrifice than I could ever make. I have grown up in a life of luxury that has never required me to put someone else’s life ahead of mine. It’s always been all about me.

What do I want to do, where do I want to work, how do I want to live, who do I want to love.

To a lot each of these questions are ones that you yourself find answers to. To others these are group decisions. Each of these impacts our entire family.

Each decision towards your self could have an opportunity cost that is your family. Living without this thought is liberating. Living with it is agonizing.

Pursue your dream? Live away from your loved ones? Feel guilty for wasting time? The alternative is don’t pursue it, move closer to your family, spend quality time with them. They struggled during their youth, they deserve to be pampered now.

Tough decision. It’s a double edged sword, if you make the decision to put yourself first it lights a fire under your ass to get their faster but the opportunity cost could be invaluable. Time with your family.

I used to think about the opportunity cost a lot up until a couple years ago when I realized if I didn’t chose me I would be unhappy and what joy is life spent with someone unhappy. (This isn’t the only reason and it’s not as simple but we’ll unpack that some other time, I promise)

The solution? Make the most of the time I spend with my family. Enjoy, laugh, take trips, really be present. This has drastically increased the quality of my life and the time I spend with my family. Fuck the opportunity cost.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Make the decision, take the chance, trust your gut and live like you’re here for a short time. Cause you are.

Everything has an opportunity cost.

The only question is how much is your dream worth?

Video of the week

I hosted my best friends wedding last weekend and it was a blast. I love these events cause it’s a much easier audience, everyone is rooting for you to succeed. I’ve realized this after hearing dozens of half assed wedding speeches which get laughs while my comic mind is waiting for the punchline - “wait that was it?”

It went well and the whole event was a blast. Here’s a snippet of me chatting roasting on stage!

Comic of the week

I saw a comedy show in Bombay last week and it was a blast. The scene is buzzing with comics, several shows every day of the week and packed audiences who LOVE comedy. Standup Comedy is still relatively new to the country but what an exciting time to be a comic literally growing the scene.

My favorite comic from the night was also a friend of a friend, the hilarious Siddharth Dudeja. He’s been in the comedy scene for 10 years and has been blowing up and embarking on his second tour around India. If you don’t understand Hinglish, you will not understand his sets unfortunately, but if you do - please follow him. You won’t be disappointed!

In Today’s Email: (Read time: 3 mins)

A question I get often is how do you get over writer’s block?

It’s easy, I procrastinate.

I’m writing this post from a hotel room in Bombay with an hour on hand before I need to leave to explore the city. I release a new post every Wednesday, so I had a whole week, why wait till the end? Especially when I knew I’m going to be traveling and in a new city.

Couple reasons:

• I treat this blog as a therapy session because I free write without a topic ahead of time, so I’m able to talk about something pressing that’s on my mind. Typically just after I write this I feel mentally clear and like to wait a couple days to start on something new.

• The honest answer: Without the threat of a looming deadline I don’t feel the urge to write something new.

I’ve been this way my whole life, studying for tests, finishing an assignment, packing for a trip. 99% of the time it turns out really well. I think I’m smart enough to know how much time I need to do something well and give myself just that before I have to do it.

But imagine how much better the outcome would be if you gave yourself more time??

Only if I had a new follower for every time someone told me this…

There are some REAL reasons why I chose to procrastinate with writing jokes, however.

This is kinda crazy, but it has happened so often that it’s forced me to consolidate my writing before shows.

What happens is that I’ll write a joke and be in some head space or mood that creates the energy for it AND when I read it again 2 days later I cannot re-create that mood and reading the joke bombs in my mind.

The solution? If I can only write before shows and I NEED to write more

I need to do more shows.

It’s honestly as simple as that, the biggest advice any established comedian will give a newbie is get on stage as much as you can and on any stage as much as you can.

I never agreed with that a 100% because testing new material at open mics or uninterested crowds can kill good material (because you may think it’s terrible, but it wasn’t the right audience)

BUT maybe they say that because all the good comics procrastinate? 🥲

I wrote this bit in a couple minutes before a show. This is part 1 of the entire bit and I’ve never released part 2 because it involved me dancing. 😂

But next week, I’ll release it here just for ya’ll ❤️

I’ve bombed several times. Without bombing you can’t get better. But it can be a scarring experience. My entire obsession with Killing Shame is to be immune to bombing. Go on stage for 10 minutes, get 0 laughs and still maintain the elite level of confidence I have before I get on stage. In some messed up freudian ways THAT is my ultimate goal.

💣 💣 💣 💣 💣

Here’s what happened. Ever since I watched Jim Carrey playing Andy Kauffman a month ago, I’ve been fixated on doing weird character work. Think Borat, Ali G, Bruno type characters but on stage and not just being funny BUT also WEIRD AF.

Making people laugh by making people uncomfortable, there’s a valley somewhere between feeling uncomfortable and feeling unsafe where pure joy and laughter lies. That’s what I’ve been trying to find.

So 3 weeks ago I did my first show in character - Abu - a stereo-typical image of what an untraveled American might think an untraveled Arab would look like.

Thick accent, funny laugh, archaic values, Borat vibes.

I entered the comedy club before the show and every one of the 70 audience members inside stopped what they were doing and stared at me as I walked in.

Meet ABU 😂 - This could either go really good or really bad - I had never been so excited and terrified at the same time.

I did the show and it went really well, the crowd loved it and I felt a new dimension in comedy open up. (I’ll talk more about this next week)

NOW coming to how I bombed. Two weeks later I performed in Dubai and I decided to do some character work. I couldn’t do Abu, cause … that would be like telling a homeless person a knock knock joke.

The good:

• The audience was completely engrossed and listened to every word

• They were utterly confused, they didn’t know how to react

• They had never seen anything like this before

The bad:

• The confusion didn’t convert to as much laughter as I had hoped for

• After shows people come up to me to chat, this time no one did haha

• In terms of total laughs - I was one of the worse comics at the show

• OH, also my family was present 😆

Unfortunately I didn’t take a video of the performance, but I would have loved to show you how quite the room got. The secondhand embarrassment would’ve been so powerful this post could go viral.

But after the show I felt mixed emotions. Happy that I had evolved in my art to have the balls to do something so risky. I felt confident and comfortable in this weird character. But I also felt a LOT of shame. I didn’t want to make eye contact with anyone as soon as I got off stage, I didn’t want to mingle with people post show, I didn’t want to talk to my fam - I FELT HUMILIATION.

And that was NEW. I’d never felt that after a performance. I knew what I was trying, but maybe people in the audience did not and they were judging me on what I just did on stage while my family saw me take an L on stage. In my mind, people’s perception of my comedy abilities diminished and I felt like a noob.

I’m still processing from that show and recalibrating thoughts. Overall it was a landmark performance for me where I figured out WHAT I was capable of BUT most importantly it showed me a WEAK SPOT in my armor. A point of extreme vulnerability that was able to take over my feelings.

I guess it’s time to nip it in the bud and KILL SHAME through a LOT more embarrassing character work 😈

Quitting cause it’s hard 😔

I heard Alex Hormozi talk about this recently - When you’re in a situation, where you’ve taken up something difficult you’ll reach a point where you’re not sure if it’s worth carrying on and the opportunity cost seems too high and nothing is going your way and you’ve been doing everything you were supposed to and you thought you’d be much further along but you aren’t.

Simple yet so profound. It has an incredible way of putting the pain in perspective that’s easy to accept.

You knew it was going to be hard. Now you’re in the middle of a shit storm. This is what hard feels like.

No promises of a better future or learning something from the journey, just BRUTAL reality.

I remember now I used to feel the same way about going to the gym. I would start, do it a couple months, stop and repeat. The excuses in my head would get so good that I’d stop for a day, then two then a month. Until the guilt started weighing in again to resume.

This happened for like 7 YEARS. And I was furious, I remember thinking this doesn’t make any sense, either go all in or stop wasting your time. And so I got to diagnosing the problem. I realized the reason I kept quitting the gym is because I hated going to it, because lifting heavy is painful and it’s hard.

SO I asked myself what would make me want to go to the gym everyday no matter what happens in life? 

If I enjoyed it so much that not going to it made me feel worse.

That’s when the switch flipped. All I had to do is learn to love the pain. 

This sounds philosophical and impractical but at the gym it worked. I have rarely missed days and it’s all because of two things:

1. I learned to really LOVE the process of lifting and enjoy the process of getting 1 more rep.

2. I memorized the feeling of how amazing my mind and body felt after a workout. Recalling this feeling was enough argument against any excuse I would have to not go to the gym.

And as days passed I started getting better at loving the suck and feeling amazing and now it’s become a habit. I don’t have excuses because my mind knows it’s pointless. Going to the gym is only second to waking up in the morning, that’s it. If I wake up I have to go to the gym, nothing else.

Perhaps the same applies to comedy?

Everyday I wake up, I need to do something that moves the needle. Write a joke or do a show. That’s all. Every single day until it becomes a habit so second nature that anything else is unacceptable.

Maybe that will flatten the extreme highs and lows?

I don’t think the tragic hopeless will ever stop talking but this might just lower his volume. 🤷‍♂️

Joke 🆚 Startup

I’ve worked on two successfully failed startups and I’ve worked on countless jokes and a few that have made people really laugh.

How you write a joke is LITERALLY like finding product-market fit 😂

Step 1: Come up with an idea

What should we joke about? A problem everyone finds relatable? Childhood trauma? Something that just happened to me?

Step 2: Write and test

Write some premises and some unexpected endings. Take what you have and immediately test at an open mic.

Step 3: Cut the fat, double down on the funny 😈

Do at least 5 open mics to gauge the response and even that might not be enough.

But now you’ll know if your chosen idea was a dud and if it’s time to go back to step 1 OR if you got some laughs … ooooh interesting … it’s time to cut what wasn’t funny and explore what people did laugh at.

Step 4: Test with a real audience

Is it funny enough? Time for it to be tested with at least 2-3 real audiences.

Note: Open mics in LA end up being small rooms with other disinterested comics who want to do their jokes and leave. Hence they’re never the best gauge of how funny your joke is. Only a real audience can give you that feedback.

Step 5: Risk it, Edit it, Test it - REPEAT

We’ve got something funny. But how funny can it get? Each of my jokes has a different grades. A It brings the house down to D which gets some laughs, is dependent on the audience type and is currently in relegation. (No F’s BABY)

Take a big risk with how you end, how you deliver it, do an act, exaggerate it, add music, become creative with it, edit and TEST.

THAT’S IT 🙃

👉 IN CONCLUSION: Every startup I’ve worked on has the same process. With the goal ALWAYS being to get the idea to feedback loop time as short as possible.

Short Feedback loops + High Iterations = NETFLIX STANDUP SPECIAL

The rate of improvement needs to be high otherwise why bother. 🤷‍♂️

Homework Assignment: Write one joke following these steps and send it to me. You have 1 week. Counts for 100% of your grade.

My Best Joke 💀

SO you remember the joke from last week? The Heckler. Yes that was one of the first times I was trying the “terrorist” jokes and it was ok I’d say a 3/10.

And here’s what it looks like after 6 months.

The improvement is undeniable and this is now my best joke. This joke has another minute to it that I’ve not released yet. Soon… (if you reply asking for it I’ll send it!)

Comics To Watch 😈

He’s one of Dave Chapelle’s favorite comics, he talks about him in his last special and until two weeks ago I’d never heard of him and now I cannot get enough.

Andy Kaufman.

It is impossible to describe him accurately, he’s one of the most famous comics of all time and in his own words - “I’ve never told a joke in my life”

If you watched this - you may be confused. And that’s exactly what Kaufman’s goal was. To blur the lines between what’s real and what’s scripted with a focus on pushing boundaries and making people uncomfortable.

Think Borat or Ali G but weirder 😂

I’d highly recommend watching Jim as Andy on Netflix. Which is an incredible documentary on Jim Carrey playing Andy Kaufman without breaking character…

Getting heckled was my greatest fear when I started comedy.

Every comic knows it’s going to happen, the only question is when?

Heckling History 101

Since there have been speeches, there have been hecklers.

But heckling isn’t always negative.

The most iconic being the George Bush shoe incident.

I recently found out Dr Martin Luther King’s iconic “I have a dream” speech was spurred by a heckler. A heckler none other than the iconic gospel queen Mahalia Jackson, who during his address told him from behind the podium “Tell them about the dream, Martin” - to which he stopped giving his prepared talk and proceeded to improvise the most iconic speeches of all time.

BUT probably the most popular heckler stories occur in comedy clubs. Because:

1. Heckling someone who writes jokes for a living is most likely going to backfire

2. Crowdwork videos with the occasional Karen’s do SO WELL on social media

It’s a vicious cycle. Social media has been a boon for comedy and comedians. No longer do we have to work our way through a club for 10 years to finally get a spot on the Late Night show, to hopefully do well and get picked up by a sitcom.

NAH with social a handful of 30 second reels, can propel you to millions of followers and a tour headlining clubs all over the world.

The game has changed.

But that means comics are flooding the platform with comedy clips and the clips that do the best are the ones with hecklers.

More heckler videos = More people think it’s ok to heckle = More heckler videos

Every comic will tell you that hecklers suck, we don’t wait for them to strike, they throw off the momentum of the show and generally create a worse experience for everyone present. But sometimes it’s fun 😈

My First Heckler

This took place two months into doing comedy. There was a drunk lady in the front giving her opinion on every comedians joke. She was a nightmare. This club happened to be a smaller club catering to newer comics and didn’t deal with hecklers as seriously as most bigger clubs would (which kick them out)

Once it was my turn to go on stage, I had to make a decision. Ignore her comments or attack her before she does. I chose the latter.

Here’s what happened:

REMEMBER THIS JOKE - BECAUSE

Right after this I went on to bomb for 4 minutes and even got a warning from the club owner. Plus it took 6 months to turn that joke into my best one.

Neel unexpectedly passed away a couple weeks ago and is one of the most selfless and funniest people I knew. RIP brother.

1. It's a bigger risk to not take the risk

18 months ago if you told me, I’d be performing at the Laugh Factory, The Comedy Store, producing my own show with the best comics in the world, get reposted by 9GaG, 800K+ likes, 7M+ views. I wouldn’t have believed you.

I wish I could show you how close I was to not trying and having none.

2. Perspective is EVERYTHING

Getting on stage isn’t the hardest part, dealing with shame is.

Inviting friends to a show and bombing on stage, while no one laughs for 8 minutes is hard. It destroys your self esteem and magnifies every negative thought about yourself.

Change your perspective. You didn’t bomb, you A/B tested. If I don’t bomb I haven’t taken a risk and without risk I cannot grow as a comic.

3. Think Like a Startup

Comedy is tough in LA, stage time is a scarce resource and at the big clubs I’m literally competing with Bill Burr and Nikki Glaser to perform. Obviously I will lose.

What do you do? Change the game.

Create your own show and get friends and connections to come out monthly. Barter stage time with other comics that produce shows. Pitch comedy shows to businesses with existing audiences (member clubs, gyms, art galleries) and use their built-in audience to produce events, get stage time and GIVE more stage time.

4. Only I will control my life, no one else will

I find it harder to post on social media than doing standup. Because if I bomb on stage it's in front of a 100 people, but if I bomb on social it’s in front of everyone I know.

What will they think? This isn’t funny, I’m not funny. Is this cringe?

I have the exact same thought writing this now, but I know now there is ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT. And also who cares? They can't do what I'm doing and as for as I'm concerned I'm the main character in my life.

5. More experiences = More learnings

I’ve failed at a lot of endeavors and have often been told I’ve wasted my time on something that didn’t workout. I think that couldn’t be further from the truth.

All hard things have similar patterns and once you identify that everything connects.

Struggling to cold call on my first sales job, helped me create a thick skin. Doing comedy taught me to be speak up in meetings without fear of judgement. Working on my last startup taught me how to build communities via newsletters.

Fuck what they say. Do what scares you.
